Local SEO vs Google Ads: What Works Best for Blue Mountains Businesses?

It’s one of the questions we get asked most by business owners from Glenbrook to Blackheath: “Should I spend my marketing money on SEO or on Google Ads?”
You might expect a Google Ads agency to say “Google Ads, obviously”. But the honest answer is that it depends on your business, your budget and how quickly you need results. And for a lot of Blue Mountains businesses, the best answer is a bit of both.
Here’s how to think about it.
First, what’s the difference?
When someone in Katoomba searches for “electrician near me”, Google shows three kinds of results:
- Ads at the top (and sometimes the bottom), marked “Sponsored”. You pay each time someone clicks. That’s Google Ads.
- The map pack: the map with three local businesses underneath. These are free, and depend mostly on your Google Business Profile.
- The organic results: the regular website listings below. Also free, and earned through SEO (search engine optimisation).
“Local SEO” covers the last two: getting your business into the map pack and ranking your website for local searches.
Local SEO: slow to start, cheap to keep
The good:
- No cost per click. Once you rank, every visit is free.
- It compounds. Good content, reviews and a strong Business Profile keep working for years.
- Trust. Many people skip the ads and click the map pack or organic results.
- Smaller towns are easier. Ranking for “plumber Lawson” is far easier than “plumber Sydney”. Many Mountains niches have only a handful of serious competitors.
The not so good:
- It’s slow. Expect months, not weeks, before you see real movement, especially for a new website.
- It’s not guaranteed. Google changes how it ranks results, and you can’t control where you land.
- It takes ongoing effort. Reviews, photos, posts, content and fixing technical issues don’t stop once you rank.
Google Ads: fast, controllable, but you pay for every click
The good:
- Immediate. Campaigns can bring in calls the same week they go live.
- Precise. You choose the searches, the towns, the hours and the budget. Want calls only from Springwood to Katoomba, weekdays 7am to 5pm? Done.
- Measurable. You can see exactly what each enquiry costs.
- Flexible. Turn it up before school holidays or winter, and down when you’re fully booked.
The not so good:
- It stops when you stop paying. No budget, no ads.
- Costs can climb in competitive niches, especially where Sydney-wide businesses bid on Mountains searches.
- It’s easy to waste money without proper keyword control, negative keywords and conversion tracking. (We’ve written about why Performance Max often fails small businesses.)
What’s different about the Blue Mountains
A few things make the Mountains a little unusual:
- Two audiences. Locals searching for services, and Sydney visitors searching for accommodation, cafés and things to do, often from home before they travel. SEO is great at catching both over time. Google Ads lets you target visitors precisely, for example people in Sydney searching for “weekend stay Leura”.
- Strong seasons. Winter, school holidays and long weekends swing demand for tourism businesses, and cold snaps or storm season do the same for trades. Google Ads can follow those peaks. SEO can’t be switched on for a busy fortnight.
- Long, thin service areas. The Mountains stretch along one highway. A tradie in Hazelbrook may happily drive to Blaxland but not to Penrith. Ads can be targeted town by town; organic rankings are harder to control by location.
- Less local competition online. Many Mountains businesses still have a thin website and an incomplete Business Profile. That’s a real opportunity for anyone who invests in SEO properly.
So which should you choose?
| Your situation | Our honest suggestion |
|---|---|
| New business, need enquiries now | Start with Google Ads, build SEO alongside |
| Established, already ranking well in the map pack | Keep SEO strong; use Ads for peak seasons or high-value services |
| Tourism or accommodation with strong seasons | Both: SEO for steady visibility, Ads to fill gaps and peak periods |
| Tight budget, can wait several months | Prioritise your Google Business Profile and reviews first |
| High-value jobs (renovations, legal, solar) | Google Ads often pays for itself quickly; SEO for long-term cost savings |
| Lots of Sydney-wide competitors bidding | Tight local targeting on Ads, plus town-specific pages for SEO |
The quick wins you can do yourself, for free
Whatever you choose, do these first:
- Complete your Google Business Profile. Categories, service areas, hours, photos and a real description.
- Ask every happy customer for a Google review, and reply to all of them, good and bad.
- Make sure your name, address and phone number match everywhere online.
- Create a page for each town or service you want to be found for, with genuinely useful local content, not copy-and-paste.
- Make your phone number easy to tap on mobile.
These help your SEO directly. They also make your Google Ads work better, because people who see your ad will often check your reviews before they call.
Our take
We’re Google Ads specialists, so we’ll be upfront: we don’t think Google Ads is always the answer. For many Blue Mountains businesses, a strong Google Business Profile and a well-built local website do a lot of the heavy lifting.
Where Google Ads shines is speed, control and the ability to grow beyond what SEO alone can deliver: reaching new towns, new services, busy seasons and Sydney visitors before they arrive.
